Discover The Recipe

The staff at Piquant Post is always thinking of exciting ways to jazz up everyday meals. And these Scandi-Style Salmon Sliders with Green Apple Slaw are a great addition to your summer cookout lineup or are easily served for weeknight dinner. In Scandinavian cuisine, salmon and herring are the most popular fish and you may find seafood smoked, pickled or cured as a traditional method of preservation for prolonged winter months. This recipe features our Swedish Savory Sweet spice blend – a unique blend that  adds deep Scandinavian flavors to any dish, be it savory or sweet. We paired the sliders with a crisp slaw to add a fresh, tart crunch.

Using Swedish Savory Sweet spice blend as a dry rub, our chefs prepared the salmon using a “blackening” technique by liberally coating the salmon then searing in a hot pan. The result is a dark and savory crust that locks in the moisture of the salmon and transforms the flavor into a global sensation. No sandwich is complete without fresh toppings so we whipped up a crisp and tangy slaw with thinly sliced green apple and red onion for vibrant flavor. Combine and layer your sliders as you choose and enjoy a taste of Scandinavian flavor in your own kitchen. Easily make this recipe plant-based by swapping the salmon for extra firm tofu steaks. Try using this spice blend to instead make our Swedish Meatballs or Swedish Meatloaf recipes on the website.

Ingredients

  • Green Apple Slaw:

  • 2 Tbsp Mayonnaise

  • 1 Tbsp Lime Juice (~1 lime)

  • ¼ tsp Piquant Post Swedish Savory Sweet

  • ½ tsp Sugar

  • ½ tsp Salt

  • 1 small Green Apple, washed

  • 1 small Red Onion

  • Scandi-Style Salmon Sliders:

  • 2lbs Salmon filet, skin removed (1 or 2 filets)

  • 1 tsp Salt or to taste (optional)

  • 1 Tbsp Piquant Post Swedish Savory Sweet

  • 1 Tbsp Canola Oil

  • 1 (8ct) pack Slider Buns

Notes

You can ask the server at the fish counter to remove the skin from the salmon or try doing it yourself here

Store any leftover green apple slaw in the fridge. It should keep fresh for up to 3 days.

Instructions

In a medium-sized bowl, combine the mayonnaise, lime juice, Piquant Post Swedish Savory Sweet blend, sugar and salt then mix well to make the slaw dressing. Slice the green apple into thin matchsticks and thinly slice the red onion. Add the green apple and red onion to the dressing and toss well to coat. Cover the slaw and set aside in the refrigerator.

Cut the salmon filet(s) into 8 equal pieces. In a small bowl combine the salt and Piquant Post Swedish Savory Sweet Blend and mix well then season each side of the salmon pieces.

Heat a large saute pan over medium heat and add the oil. Once heated, place the salmon pieces in the pan and allow them to cook for 2 minutes on one side. Ensure that you do not crowd the pan. After 2 minutes, gently turn the salmon pieces over and cook for an additional 3 minutes on the other side. Remove the cooked salmon from the pan and set aside on a plate.

Assemble the sliders by laying your favorite greens on the bottom half of a slider bun followed by a piece of salmon then top with a spoonful of green apple slaw. Repeat until all the sliders are assembled. Serve with your favorite salad greens.

Alternatives & Substitutions

  • Trying to lower your calorie intake? Try greek yogurt in place of mayonnaise for the green apple slaw.

  • You can also prepare the salmon on the grill at your next outdoor gathering. Be sure to oil the grill grates generously to prevent the salmon from sticking. Cook for the same amount of time as the recipe.

  • You can also make a quick marinade for the salmon by combining 1 Tbsp of our Swedish Savory Sweet spice blend with 1 Tbsp oil, 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp of salt and the juice of half a lime. Mix well and let the salmon marinate for 20 minutes.

  • Looking for a plant-based or vegetarian version of this recipe? Try using extra firm tofu in place of salmon and proceed with the steps as noted. Be sure to press the water out of the tofu properly before cooking.

  • Try using this spice to make some of our meat-free options: Vegan Swedish Meatballs! This classic Scandinavian dish features our Swedish Savory Sweet spice blend and is the perfect plant-based weeknight entree. Or make our delightfully crunchy Potato Latkes and serve them with our Beet and Apple Salad recipe.
For meat lovers, try our Danish Breaded Pork, or our Swedish Meatloaf and Gravy, or our succulent Labskovs Danish Beef Stew

  •  Our Swedish Savory Sweet spice blend is so flexible that it can also be used in sweet recipes such as these Swedish Spiced Cutout cookies. The earthy notes of cinnamon and nutmeg easily complements this traditional Swedish sweet treat.
