You may need: Turkish Herb Blend
Turkish cuisine combines culinary traditions borrowed from Middle Eastern, North African, and European neighbors. The Turkish Black Sea region relies heavily on seafood, and we bring these rich flavors to your table with this Turkish Baked Cod dish. Turkish cuisine includes fish cooked in various ways: grilled, fried, poached, and ‘pilaki’, which means cooked with assorted vegetables in the oven, as in this dish. Flaky, white fish is seasoned with our Turkish Herb Blend, a mix of classic Turkish flavors including Mediterranean herbs like dill, mint, and oregano. In addition, you will taste a pop of fruity peppery heat from the Aleppo chili flakes and a sweet, nutty finish from the cumin and fennel seed, making a dish that excites the tastebuds and will soon become a family favorite.
Our Turkish herb blend can also be used to make another popular Turkish street food, ‘Doner Kebap’, which translates to “rotating kebab” in Turkish, is flavored, sliced meat roasted on a rotisserie and stuffed in a pita or served over salad with vegetables and sauces. Use this blend to also make vegan Turkish Red Lentil Soup or Stuffed Eggplant recipes you can find in the alternative section below.
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tbsp Piquant Post Turkish Herb Blend
4 large tomatoes, chopped (or one 14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes)
½ tsp salt
4 cod fillets (about 3oz each)
1 lemon, sliced (optional)
Aim to use filets with similar thickness. This allows the fish fillets to cook at the same rate and to avoid over or under cooking filets.
If you don’t have an oven-proof skillet, transfer the veggies after step 2 to an oven safe dish.
Optional ingredients add a little character and flavor but don’t sweat it if you don’t have them.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Using an oven-proof skillet, heat olive oil over medium high heat. Add onion and green bell pepper, sauté for 3-4 minutes. Add garlic and Piquant Post Turkish Herb Blend. Sauté for 1 more minute, until fragrant.
Add chopped tomatoes and salt. Stir and bring to a light simmer. Simmer for 3-4 minutes, until tomatoes soften and cook down.
Add cod fillets into the skillet and nestle into the tomato sauce. Sprinkle a dash of salt and Turkish Herb Blend on top of the fillets.
Transfer the skillet to the oven. Bake for 25 minutes, until cod is cooked through. Serve with lemon slices.
Substitute cod for your favorite fish or shrimp.
Try using Turkish Herb Blend in our vegan Turkish Red Lentil Soup or Stuffed Eggplant recipes. Or, try making an authentic Turkish flatbread known as Bazlama, perfectly seasoned with our spice.
Create your own Turkish Doner Kebab meat, one of the most popular street dishes. Or take a Middle Eastern twist on these Burgers or Ratatouille. How about our Turkish Beef Stir Fry? Love pizza? How about our Vegetable Pide?
