You may need: Peri Peri
In our endless quest to reimagine global recipes, we're bringing the bold flavors of African-Portuguese peri peri seasoning to the plant-based table with this Peri Peri Tofu Skewers recipe. Inspired by the iconic peri peri sauce, this dish features succulent tofu marinated in a bold blend of spices, capturing the essence of Portuguese-African fusion cuisine. Peri peri, or "pepper pepper" in Swahili, ignites the palate with its fiery kick, tracing its roots back to Portuguese adopting local African chilis and cooking techniques. Our chefs have dialed back the heat to allow you to customize to your liking. But this spice is the star of the show here, infusing every bite with a tantalizing mix of smoked paprika, chili flakes, savory aromatics and zesty citrus—a testament to the global influences that shaped Portuguese meals from the time their traders and explorers navigated far away shores.
Our Peri Peri blend, meticulously crafted for maximum flavor impact, elevates the tofu to new heights. Its neutral base eagerly soaks up the tangy sauce, transforming each bite into a symphony of spicy, savory goodness. Whether enjoyed solo or paired with fresh greens, rice, or quinoa, these tofu skewers promise a dining experience that's as vibrant and bold as the cultures that inspired them. So fire up the grill and get ready to embark on a flavor-packed journey that celebrates the best of plant-based cuisine.
2 blocks of tofu cut into 2” square slabs 1/2” thick
Peri Peri Sauce
1/4 sweet (yellow) onion, coarsely chopped
1/2 red bell pepper, seeded & coarsely chopped
1 lemon, juiced
5-7 large, fresh basil leaves
3 cloves of garlic
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1.5 tbsp of Piquant Post Peri Peri spice blend
1 jalapeño pepper, seeded (optional)
If using wooden skewers, make sure to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before grilling to prevent them from burning.
You can grill the skewers on a charcoal grill or cook in a grill pan on your stovetop instead of in your oven!
Feel free to customize the marinade with your favorite herbs. Thyme, rosemary, or cilantro can be great additions.
These skewers pair well with a side of rice, quinoa, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
Preheat your oven to 400 F. Brush the tofu pieces with olive oil and season with salt and Piquant Post Peri Peri. Thread the tofu pieces onto skewers. Place the skewers on a parchment lined sheet pan.
Place the tofu in the oven and cook for 30-40 minutes until the tofu is browned and crispy. Turn the skewers over halfway through the cooking time.
While the tofu is cooking, make the Peri Peri sauce. Add onion, bell pepper, lemon juice, basil, garlic, olive oil, Peri Peri spice, and jalapeño (optional) to a food processor. Purée for 30 seconds then use a spoon to scrape bits from side and pulse for 20 more seconds until sauce is mostly smooth. Set aside until ready to serve.
Serve the tofu skewers with the Peri Peri sauce and fresh lemon wedges.
If you prefer a different protein, you can use seitan, tempeh, or vegetables like bell peppers, onions, and zucchini on the skewers instead of tofu.
